Foray Updates

Sunday 30th August 2009

We had a surprisingly successful foray at Boar's Hill, Oxford. Summer forays are always a bit hit and miss, but we found a good mix of pasture and woodland species.

Here is a list of what was found:

Latin Name Common Name Substrate
Bulgaria inquinans Black Bulgar Oak branch (fallen)
Calvatia gigantea Giant Puffball Pasture
Clitocybe dealbata Ivory Funnel Pasture
Collybia fusipes Spindle Toughshank Hazel stump
Coprinus plicatilis Pleated Inkcap Pasture
Daedaleopsis confragosa Blushing Bracket Hazel branch (fallen)
Daldinia concentrica King Arthur's Cakes Hazel branch (fallen)
Ganoderma adspersum Oak
Hygrocybe nigrescens Blackening Waxcap Pasture
Hypholoma fasciculare Sulphur Tufts Hazel stump
Marasmius oreades Fairy Ring Champignon Pasture
Omphalina (possibly ericetorum) Heath Navel Pasture
Panaeolus sphinctrinus Pasture
Piptoporus betulinus Birch Polypore Birch (fallen)
Stropharia semiglobata Dung Roundhead Dung/pasture
Trametes versicolor Turkey Tail Hazel branch (fallen)

Cautionary Note: We found Fairy Ring Champignons growing right next to deadly poisonous Clitocybe dealbata. The colours of the mushrooms were almost identical and all were picked thinking they were Fairy Rings. Only when formally identifying them, it was found the subtle differences between the two - gill and cap structure. So beware, double check every mushroom you find.

Bernwood Forest - not masses of mycological activity here. A bit dry underfoot, and NO Boletus edulis to my disappointment. However, here's a list of what we found:

Collybia fusipes Spindle Toughshank Hazel stump
Coprinus plicatilis Pleated Inkcap Grass - Woodland Path
Fuligo septica Scrambled Egg Slime Stump (Birch?)
Galerina cephalotricha Stump (Birch?) in moss
Hypholoma fasciculare Sulphur Tufts Hazel stump
Laccaria laccata The Deceiver Grass - Woodland Path
Piptoporus betulinus Birch Polypore Birch (fallen)
Rhodocollbia maculata Rooting Tough Shank Grass - Woodland Path

Wow, there's been a one year hiatus in updating the foray finds! There are too many to display on this webpage. If you are interested in our finds and those across the entire UK, please visit the ABFG's CATE database. Click here.
